a punch to the face

I was reading my bible before going to bed tonight and came across a passage. At first glance I skimmed over it, but the magnitude of what I'd just read quickly registered in my mind. I can only describe how I felt as a deep conviction and sadness. It was like a punch to the face.

I am including several translations. Ezekiel 16:49,50

"Now this was the sin of your sister Sodom: She and her daughters were arrogant, overfed and unconcerned; they did not help the poor and needy. They were haughty and did detestable things before me." -NIV

"Sodom’s sins were pride, gluttony, and laziness, while the poor and needy suffered outside her door. She was proud and committed detestable sins" -NLT

"The sin of your sister Sodom was this: She lived with her daughters in the lap of luxury—proud, gluttonous, and lazy. They ignored the oppressed and the poor. They put on airs and lived obscene lives." -The Message
